To Fall in Love

By: Zeinah Hesham

To some people, love is just chemicals bursting in your brain that act as catalysts that trigger your emotions and send goosebumps all over your body and make you feel butterflies in your stomach. To others, love is the most magnificent and ineffable nonsensical sensation that anyone could ever be lucky to experience. But most people don’t truly understand what love is; they do not understand it so their definition of it is liking someone for a bit over a month and them being constantly on your mind which is clearly a definition that has been self-interpreted from their own past relationships, the trending love songs, the best selling novels and the cinematic adventures on netflix.

However, if we think about it just for a second it would turn out that every one of us does know what love is. Whether that’s love for your parents, your pet, your friends, your school, your work, your favourite TV show or yourself. Yet we always think about it in a way more complex road because whenever we think of love, we seem to just be thinking about the love that we are meant to have for our significant others. You may love your partner from the first month of your relationship but you confuse that for the concept that is evidently more complicated than that which is to be ‘in love’.

Legends have written beautiful words about that concept, they have explained it and explained it over and over again but they always forget that unlike any other feeling in the world, it cannot be easily simplified because it is not just something that you feel in your heart. It is so much more than that.

Love is a sensation that you feel in your entire body, it is something you feel in your stomach, your legs, your arms, your head, your heart and even in your soul. Being in love with someone is never to stop thinking about them in a way that excites you – you cannot wait until you truly know them as well as their oldest friend and better than their own parents. Your excitement carries on when you think about being with them and sadness fills your entire body when you know you won’t – so much that you can feel pain in your entire body and involuntary groans escape your mouth from how much you miss them. Their smile can brighten your day as cliche as it sounds but in all honesty , it can sometimes feel like a cure to a bad day, a bad week or a bad life. They are the first person you wanna go to when the most exciting thing happened in your life because all you want to do is share every single detail of your life with them and when something horrendous occurs, all you wanna do is hear their voice because it may as well be the melody that mellows your heart and their embrace – being in their arms and listening to their heartbeat in simple words – feels like home.

We can always put a number on being in love .

How long does it take? 4 months? 6 months? A moment? A smile? A kiss?

Is it safe? Should I trust them? Should I let myself fall? Should I take their hand and leave everything behind?

And the truth is – there is no accurate answer because no one loves the same. No one’s relationship is the same as yours. No one has faced the same experiences and therefore cannot think the same way you do. But no one feels what you feel, no one knows your partner like you do, no one knows how vast your emotions are.

The terrifying thing is that our emotions are unpredictable, we can’t look at statistics or look at numbers to understand what we feel or predict what following our heart will lead to. What we can do is experience the most wonderful feeling in the world – as we’re told. You can’t control what happens but all you can do is tell them you love them, look at them every chance you can because they’re the most beautiful person in the world, do everything you can to see their smile or make them laugh because the feeling of being their happiness is indescribable, take your chance to ask everything there is to know about them and tell them about you.

Though, it may be scary – there will come a day when you’re in a car with your windows down and a love song comes on and instead of singing along, you won’t be able to stop thinking about their eyes and how they seem like comets and for a very brief moment that may seem like a lasting lifetimes, you will know what it’s like to be the luckiest person in the world.
