Do you know what sucks? Summer weather. Do you know what sucks even more? Having your period during the terrible heat. I’ve gathered some tips and tricks that I’ve learnt along the way to hopefully help you in this very difficult time.
#1 Bye-Bye Caffeine
As much as caffeine is a necessity in my life and many others’, try to find substitutes for it. You can drink smoothies instead of caffeinated drinks, not only are they much healthier for your skin and body overall, but also with the unbearable summer heat they are incredibly refreshing too.
#2 Chug! Chug! Chug!
It’s summer. It’s hot. You’re in pain. You’re sweating. You’re not doing very well. Neither is your skin probably because of the hormones. So, stay hydrated. Drinking water is honestly miraculous at times. It’s refreshing, hydrating and it will do wonders for your skin and breakouts. Also, lessens the pain.
#3 Holistic Self Care Week
Spend the week taking care of yourself. I mean after all you do deserve it. You don’t need to do something that’s very extravagant. Go back to the basics of selfcare. Showering, face and hair masks. Even watching chick flicks. Self Care isn’t just physical, it’s mental too. If you feel like crying, cry. If you feel like laughing, laugh. Screw whatever “reservations” you have about summer bodies and diets, you craving things is your body telling you that you need em. If you feel like eating chocolate, then eat some damn chocolates. Take care of yourself. Treat yourself.
#4 Shake It Gurl
Surprisingly enough I found that running is the best way to deal with cramps. Movement in general somehow just soothes my pain. Everybody is different however, so this method may not work with you, but it’s definitely worth a shot. Even if it doesn’t work, at least you get a good dose of dopamine. If you cannot run, at least do some yoga, it will do wonders for you.
#5 I Love McDonald’s Too, But Nah
Junk food contains so many chemicals that it actually just makes your cramps worse. Even though McDonald’s is incredibly delicious, it’ll destroy your body, shocker I know. You can limit yourself to having just 1 junk food or fast food meal during your cycle, but preferably, cut it out completely. Eat lots of food containing potassium and vitamin C such as; oranges, bananas, and lemons (chug lemonade if you have to). Just basically lots of fruits and vegetables.
#6 Down Time is Lit
I know it seems very silly, but sometimes we actually forget to just rest. It’s very simple. Trying to find a comfortable position for you to rest in might be tough at first but once you actually do find it, it’s the best feeling ever. If you’re well rested not only will it relieve some of the pain, but it will also help with your grumpiness too. Take some time off from whatever it is that you’re doing and take a nap.
Don’t forget to take your meds, have a cup of something with cinnamon, and hug your heatpad. Stay safe guys!
