Spring break is almost here! What better to keep ourselves entertained than by binging on pizza and watching the best supernatural TV shows to ever exist? This list includes my favorites, from the cliche and old to the new and strange, I’ve got you covered.
1-Supernatural (2005 – )
This series (a personal favorite) follows the journey of two brothers who – after the supernatural death of their mother – were raised by their father to track and hunt all and any demonic creatures. This series definitely contains all the family drama you need and just enough comedy to balance it out, it may center around the supernatural but it’s still lighthearted. After all they’ve been through, Sam and Dean Winchester decide to rely on each other as bigger threats come to light and enemies set out to tear them apart. No one can be trusted, it’s a family business. What makes this show brilliant is the integration of many different characters through cross-cultural myths with just the right amount of drama.
2- The Vampire Diaries (2009 – 2017)
An all time favorite, for everyone.
This show is set a few months after a tragic accident that killed the parents of Elena Gilbert and her brother Jeremy, both are trying to come to terms with their grief although it’s harder for Elena to hide her sadness since she used to be more popular and involved in school. She’s later drawn to the new mysterious student, Stefan, unaware of the fact that he is a centuries old vampire trying to live harmoniously among humans. While his brother, Damon is the total opposite. Damon is a stereotypical, cliche vampire who’s brutal and embraces violence. They both wage a war for Elena’s soul and that of everyone else in her small Virginia town.
3- The Originals (2013 – 2018)
A spin-off from the vampire diaries, the originals is more of a family drama. It centers around the original and first family of vampires to exist. Klaus, the original hybrid (vampire/werewolf) returns to New Orleans, which his family helped build, in order to investigate a plot against him. There he finds his former protege, Marcel, who’s reigning powerfully but is causing tension in the supernatural community. Later Klaus’s brother Elijah joins him and they learn that the werewolf Hayley has fallen into the hands of a defiant witch who has life-changing information. Klaus and Elijah plan to reclaim the city, and while waiting to see if their last remaining sibling, Rebekah, will leave Mystic Falls to join them. The love they all have for each other is guaranteed to leave you in tears
4- Teen Wolf (2011 – 2017)
If you haven’t watched this, you’ve missed out on so much.
Scott McCall was trying to break from anonymity in high school along with his troublesome bestfriend Stiles Stilinski. While walking in the woods one night Scott encounters a creature, is bitten in the side, and his life is forever changed. Is he still human? Controlling the strange urges he now feels is the toughest part and he’s afraid the urges could end up controlling him. Is he gifted or cursed? Especially as he is drawn to the mischievous Allison, whom he can’t get enough of. There’s the Hale family drama, hunters, an insane pack of Alphas, too-hot twins, a crazy Druid, a sociopath mortal, a werefox, possessing demons, lots of relationship dynamics, and the list goes on and on and on. This is seriously one of the best shows to ever exist.
*Dylan O’Brien aka Stiles Stilinski, might as well be the highlight of the whole show, he brings sarcasm and intellect to the group and makes us all wish he was in our school (for real)
5- Shadowhunters (2016 – )
“All the stories are real”
In a world where demons, angels, and even fairies exist, shadowhunters are there to protect humans from the shadow world and to maintain balance. The plot centers around Clary Fray who, on her 16th birthday, discovers a surprise concerning her life. The teenager is not who she thinks she is — she comes from a long line of human-angel hybrids, called Shadowhunters, who hunt demons. After her mother is kidnapped, Clary is thrust into the world of demon-hunting. She relies on the mysterious Jace and fellow hunters Isabelle and Alec to help her navigate the dark world. While her human best friend Simon helps her unravel secrets that might lead her to her mom.
6- Stranger Things (2016 – )
When Will Byers suddenly goes missing, the whole town of Hawkins, Indiana, turns upside down. Many people are on the search for Will, including his mother, Joyce, his brother, Jonathan, his friends–Mike, Dustin, and Lucas, the police chief, Jim Hopper, and other notable people. But one thing leads to another, creating a supernatural trail. And things get even weirder when a little girl with a shaved head comes into the story.
*set backwards in time, it makes everything seem more innocent and light hearted while there are supernatural occurrences, this is most definitely going on your watchlist because of the amazing cast and the mystery of the show.
7- The Walking Dead (2010 – )
A drama set in the years after a devastating zombie apocalypse. Led by former police officer Rick Grimes, his family and a group of other survivors find themselves constantly on the move in search of a safe and secure home. But the pressure each day to stay alive sends many in the group to the deepest depths of human cruelty, and they soon discover that the overwhelming fear of the survivors can be more deadly than the zombies walking among them.
*the show has the best graphics along with one of the most suspenseful storylines you’ll probably ever witness.
