Your Ultimate Mini Guide to Understanding and Treating Oily Skin

By: Hanya Tarek

Among my friends, I’m known for my love about anything cosmetics and skincare. If I ever hear “self-care” you best believe you’re going to wish you can take back your words because of my non-stop blabbing about the subject. Skin care is very significant and mind you, there’s nothing wrong with having acne, blackheads, and other skin issues – but striving to have healthy skin, because your skin is your biggest organ, is an essential part of caring for and loving yourself. Having skin issues is physically painful too, so I’m only here to help you with that! When you start taking care of your skin and your body, you aren’t doing it for anyone nor are you doing it to look good for a date once or twice. It’s a lifestyle. You’re doing it to feel good about yourself for yourself. For your own contentment. Ultimately, skincare *is* a part of self-love.

But before jumping into anything, you need to know that I’m in no way shape or form a certified dermatologist! I’m an experienced teenager willing to help for cheap. This is also concentrated on oily skin so this may not be helpful to those of you with normal/dry skin, but I can definitely do you justice on that too if you would like. THIS IS HELPFUL AND RIGHTEOUS FOR GUYS JUST AS IT’S HELPFUL AND RIGHTEOUS FOR GIRLS! Now with that being said, we may jump into all the good stuff.

Allow me to educate you a bit about your precious skin. There are sebaceous glands located within the skin responsible for secreting sebum, which is an oily substance that lubricates and protects the skin from drying out or getting irritated. If the process goes smoothly -which I need to add that it barely does- it removes dead skin cells and dirt from your pores. However, excess sebum results to clogged pores and greasy skin leading to a host of imperfections. Obviously, people with oily skin secrete more sebum than normal hence the term. So it might be a struggle to have oily skin but on the bright side, you won’t be getting wrinkles anytime soon!

Now if you’ve reached this point and still don’t know if you have oily skin or not, this is how you know.
1) Your face usually appears shiny later on in the day.
2) Makeup doesn’t stay on and “slides” off of your skin.
3) Oilier areas have blackheads, pimples, or other types of acne, especially on your T-Zone.
4) Your pores look visibly enlarged.

Oily Skin is very common when your hormone levels are heightened during puberty, during some parts of your menstrual cycle, and during pregnancy -that is if you’re a female of course- because sebaceous glands become more active during these times. The climate can also be affecting your skin as heat and humidity lead to an increase of oil production. And one last reason is because of sweet genetics; you may have simply ended up inheriting it from your parents.

With that covered, I can finally start speaking about treatment. *finally*

Having a daily skin care routine that consists of washing, toning, and moisturising the skin is the best and easiest way to having problem-free skin. You need to do that twice, after waking up and before going to bed.

*Olive Oil! Apply a couple of drops of olive oil to your palm and massage it on your face thoroughly in circular motions for 2 minutes then rinse with warm water.

Olive oil extremely helpful in drawing out impurities from within the skin and it nourishes the skin without leaving your face oily!

*Honey + Lemon! Quite frankly, I have never seen a better duo than this. Take half a lemon and squeeze some honey on it’s surface then thoroughly massage it in circular motion avoiding your eyes.

Honey nourishes and hydrates your skin while lemon helps to bring down the excessive oil production. Not to mention that they’re commonly found everywhere.

*Clean&Clear ‘s Morning Energy Shine Control Daily Facial Wash.

It contains lemongrass and fruit extracts and it’s great for oily skin, just don’t get it in your eyes!

*Himalaya Herbals Purifying Neem Face Wash.

One of my all time favourite cleansers. It’s great for normal to oily skin types and it contains natural and effective products!

*Apple Cider Vinegar! Mix 1 part ACV and 2 parts filtered water in a container. Squeeze some on a cotton pad and spread across your skin avoiding the eye area.

If you still didn’t know, ACV is one of the best natural ingredients for your skin as it keeps the excess oil at bay and balances your pH level.

*Rose Water! Mix 1 part Rose Water with 2 parts filtered water in a container and use just as the ACV.

It further cleanses your skin while balancing your pH level with a soft rosey smell!

Honestly my holy grail moisturiser is Nivea Soft Moisturizing Cream with Jojoba Oil & Vitamin E!! It’s super cheap and it comes in different sizes and is absolutely amazing for all skin types so I don’t see the need to talk about something else! Try it and you don’t even have to thank me!!

I really hope you see results after including some love to your skin on a daily basis and I hope you understand how different and unique every aspect of yourself is.

May you always feel blessed and content!
