This January was a disaster, for real. It was full of exams, resolutions, work, and planning for a lit year. I’ve decided to compile for you a list of special people, ones who are always on the go, trying to balance their lives and make something out of themselves. For all those involved, January was an exhausting but amazing month, full of either executing last minute 2017 plans or actually fully planning shit for 2018. Life as young, talented, and ambitious people has never been more difficult – or rewarding.
1- Laila Ezzat
Definitely an all time favorite human being and model – Laila was on literal fire this month. She modeled for THE Dima Jewelry’s new collection; one she stated that she absolutely loved shooting, and honestly? We (the team) were at a meeting when the pictures came out and we fangirl-ed for at least 20 minutes. Even better, she was part of a huge women empowerment campaign – #SheMadeIt – started by some of this country’s leading fashion empires. The #SheMadeIt Campaign came out as a lit video, featuring Ezzat as Cleopatra which was a different but nonetheless stunning new look for her.
I’m proud to have been a part of something that represents the strong women in history and to get to be Cleopatra especially in the video was also a lot of fun – minus the snake
2- Yung Pharaoh
Yosef Eid – aka Yung Pharaoh – had always stunned with his lyrics and his music, but recently he collaborated with Camo Trip (Mahmoud Bonna) on a new song “Mistakes of a Teenager“. Yung had ended 2017 with a bang – he had released several songs from his mixtape “Coronation” , ones that I personally have on my playlist alongside his entire first mixtape “The Rise”. From what I can tell so far, Yung’s mixtape is lit and every song released is more fire than the one before it, it’s quite insane really. Lord only knows what he’s firing next but we can surely tell that 2018 will be a strong year for this boy right here.
P.S. YOU MUST LISTEN TO THE TRAP CYCLE TOO (all of it the ending is amazing)
“Mistakes of A Teenager” is simply a message from two teens to the rest of the teens. We realized that we were mistaken and the only way to help is by sharing our experience and also by warning the other teens.
On a side note: did you know that Laila and Yung are bestfriends???
3- Sohaila Kandil
Now that’s a brave woman. The twice Kojak Studio model just chopped her hair off – all of it. Sohaila is one girl I personally hold a lot of respect for, she takes her work super seriously and is never afraid to get out of her comfort zone. Honestly? I’ve already obsessed over her hair and I am once again, it’s defying what’s thought to be feminine and womanly, it’s against what most models are making a trend of right now – long hair. Sohaila is a definite trend setter and I cannot wait to see what projects and shoots she will for sure kill this year.
“I took the decision on the spot! I thought about it for a few minutes, then I told myself if I think for a bit longer I’m definitely changing my mind… But then came that embedded narrator in my head saying “but your modeling career” and finally came out the real me saying “FUCK IT! I’m doing what makes ME happy” and I went to the hairdresser and chopped it all off! I don’t regret it one bit. Working out became much easier, waking up in the morning and saying “fuck the mirror, im going down” is definitely a plus and let’s just say I don’t have to put a lot of effort in my hair when it comes to parties because it already stands out regardless.” – Sohaila
4- Léna Selim
Léna is an up and coming 17 year old model, she’s done quite a few insane shoots, Léna is a lot different which is one of the things I love about her most. The LFC student ended her 2017 with a Timberland shoot that’s coming out soon, and is already readying herself for two shoots that are coming up within the next two weeks – Daly Dress and Premoda. Léna is up to big exciting things and I’m giddy with joy and anticipation at what she could be cooking up. As far as I’m aware though, my favorite shoot – and the latest she herself has posted – is one for Azwak, and she fucking stuns.
Sidenote #2: Léna and Sohaila are also bestfriends – dayum ladies
5- Short Mo
My personal love for this kid aside, Short Mo released a lit af track earlier this year and is planning a project that’s not only daring but also difficult. Short Mo’s rise truly came with the release of Al Qaseer back in October 2017; which – by the way – has 13.8k views. Since then he released 3 new tracks, C.E.O, Optimistic, and Ain’t Changing – while all three are really good, my personal favorite was Ain’t Changing, it was actually released only 4 days ago, seriously must be checked out. As for the project? Well, Short Mo is producing his first single ever and it’s going to be insane – “Change the World” – COMING SOON!
It’s been full of work, getting more motivated every day. I’ve got big plans for the future, trust me its coming.
6- Hanya, Farah, Alia, and Hagar
Hanya Grida, Farah Haggag, Alia El Sirgany, and Hagar Ibrahim – four girls, one hell of a fucking community. See, on January the 4th of this year these 4 girls launched what is quickly becoming a safe place for feminists and women in general. The project is Feministegy, an Instagram community with almost 800 followers already, aiming to empower women through their posts. What grabbed my attention was a particular idea they’re planning and will soon be executing – PMS packages – yes you read that right. The four young girl bosses and entrepreneurs are planning a service that will deliver affordable and comforting packages to be delivered to your doorstep when your period is around. Normalizing menstruation and delivering period necessities? Yes please!
BY THE WAY – they’re recruiting heads for their departments – for more info DM them @feministeg and here’s the sign up link!
From male above female to male equals female and all whats related from discussions to talks. We, Feministegy’s commute, come to launch monthly liberal outings where we welcome everyone to scream their feminist guts out. In addition to that, we fundraise through releasing monthly cute, little PMS packages that we know would treat our females right and help save our males from … you know what.
7- Aly Mohamed Aly
Aywa da beta3 mateegy fel taboot w negeeb hatshepsut. Aly Mohamed Aly is the founder of our ever favorite brand Oryx, if Aly isn’t fel tamreen or at home the he’s with his brother and designer, working on products, planning, trying, and executing. Aly actually launched a series of gorgeous and simple crystal pendants with transparent cords that we are desperately in love with recently. In fact, the shoot for those pretty little things was done just last week with model Nouran Omar. You can check their Instagram page for more – but personally – I say wait a bit there’s a particularly interesting piece coming soon.
8- Fatima Abdalla
Fatima Abdalla – or Tattou to everyone who knows her – is one with enough wanderlust to satisfy an entire generation. Fatima’s travel blog – Lost with Fatima – is full of gorgeous pictures of Fatima herself in some insanely exotic locations from all over the world. What’s quite funny is that Fatima is also obsessed with medicine, she dreams of going to medical school and so that inspired her latest trip to Aswan. Fatima is now interning at the Magdy Yacoub Foundation (MYF) in Aswan alongside a close friend; funfact, they’re both 15.
“So, I’m a 10th grader at Europa Schule Kairo, a German school in new Cairo. The German system requires 10th graders to go on a work experience for 2 weeks which is pretty similar to a student internship. I thought a lot about where I wanted to go and of course, having a huge interest in medicine the first place that popped into my head was Magdi Yacoubs Foundation Aka Aswan Heart Center. But how? what should I do? The first thing I did was I talked to my friend, who also had the dream of going there and we both decided to go to our biology teacher and ask for help as we knew that AHC doesn’t allow any observers who haven’t attended medical school yet. Our teacher tho, realized how committed we have become and really wanted to help us by writing a recommendation letter that would help us participate in their Observship program. Despite the wait, we have afterwards received an email that exceptionally ensured us a place there.” – Fatima
9- Laila Tamer
Laila is one hell of a talented painter, January not only brought her a lot of clients but also one hell of an opportunity – Laila is going international. Let me back track, Laila’s journey through art is one I have watched grow from even before her page – Looly’s Art. In fact, I’ve known Laila for about 3 years now, her growth journey is remarkable. Laila’s paintings are to die for – their gorgeousness is insane. The 16 year old kicked off 2018 painting an art piece a bit different from her usual, and that piece? Will be hung up in one of Milano’s hottest clubs and all I’ve got to say is – dayum baby you’ve gone far. If this is how Laila started 2018, what the hell could she be bringing these coming months?
10- Nour Rizk
Besides the fact that Rizk is my fitspiration – she’s one hell of a talented makeup artist – actually, she’s done the makeup of almost every single person I know this last October for Halloween and it was sick. Nour spent her January planning for our most waited events of every year – Proms. Her latest makeup look was actually done on photographer extraordinaire Sherien Shatta. Besides planning the prom photoshoots, planning out certain looks, taking their pictures, posting them – there’s something else cooking actually, which I’ll be revealing soon. Nour is encouraging you all to start booking appointments with her for your proms because she’s going to be hella busy and you cannot afford to miss out on being subject of her talent for the best night in all of your schooling years. DM her on MakeupbyNRizk for booking and inquiries!
11- Farah Dessouky
This is so biased cause this strong badass girl boss is my bestfriend, but oh well. Farah is my right hand woman, she goes through my 3am panic attacks at our marketing project going wrong, and my complaints at not having enough articles to post gheir my personal issues. Farah is one hell of a writer, she’s a sick planner, and she’s got a voice to rival Oprah’s. Farah is one of the main reasons behind the success of not only this very blog, but the mother media company Power Media, and the sister blog Feminazma. Farah is always battling sexual harassment and empowering girls left, right, and center. January brought for Farah a new project – Feminazma – teenntimes’s sister blog required pulling together an entire team of writers, marketers, and a media team, oh – and her finals. Farah handled everything spectacularly, and on an even more biased note – I’m proud that this woman has my back.
Please keep in mind that every single person on this list has school or uni to balance alongside those things too, it isn’t easy you know – we all make it look effortless, but it’s not. It’s a precarious balance between a social life, a relationship, work, school, and family time – there has to be time off from all of those things too. It’s most definitely not easy, the balance is basically crazy ass last minute assignments and sudden shoots, letting out our frustrations through tamreen, and trying to make it out alive – or in some cases, trying to climb the ladder higher and faster. These are people who have a hell of a backbone, and they’re surely this generation’s leading figures – I don’t doubt it a single bit.
On a last side note: I’m glowing with pride that 5 of the 11 people on this list are part of my teentimes family, empowered people empower people.
