Going Vegan in Egypt is Easier Than You Think

I’ll start off by saying, major kudos to the people who have maintained a vegan lifestyle, especially here in Egypt. But, to struggling Vegan attempters, hello, I’m here to help. Now I know, trust me I know, how hard it is giving up that juicy goodness that we call meat, so the easiest way to start off, I found, is eliminating the easy factors.

Firstly, dairy products: these are the easiest to swap out for healthier, vegan alternatives. For milk it’s pretty basic, you could go to any supermarket and find an alternative to cow’s milk, I highly recommend almond milk, it’s equal amounts creamy and sweet, so actually, it’s kind of better than cow’s milk. It can be pretty expensive, so for those of you who don’t want to spend your money on expensive milk from Gourmet, you could always make your own at home.

*Almond Milk Recipe*:

-Place almonds in a pot

-Soak them in room temperature water for 48 hrs.

– After soaking, pour some of the almonds, without the water, into
a blender with 1 cup of water and blend until they become a milky
texture

-There you have it!

All of the other dairy products can be replaced with coconut, in all
its forms (coconut oil etc.) as well as tofu! Which you can find at
Gourmet, Tofu is pretty bland so you can add anything you want to
give it flavour.

I’ve watched countless vegan meal recipes, and they all work great, you just have to know where to look for your ingredients. Seeds are a big aspect of Veganism, and you can get your hands on your essential seeds at your local Imtenan, or Abu Oaf, not only
for seeds, but a lot of other vegan ingredients. Now, to the main event, as you know there aren’t really many options or hope to finding a good vegan burger or steak at easy
access, but, that’s just the whole point lol so, sorry, It’ll take you time to get used to, but the end result will be a healthier lifestyle!

Great Pasta place, great overall vegan alternative pasta dishes, salads and snacks! We Egyptians love our carbs, so here’s your fix!

The ultimate breakfast spot with an aesthetic environment (select items are vegan)

– Royal Tandoor, River walk (next to waterway), Fifth
Settlement

Great authentic Indian food, made by an Indian chef with ingredients shipped directly from India, wide range of Vegan items on the menu.

– Zööba, Various locations

Authentic Egyptian food, with a twist, they have a few good vegan alternatives to your usual Egyptian breakfast and snack foods.

– Eatery

Known for their high quality food presented on platters of art, and eating it in an atmosphere, which you could call a mixture of midcentury modern with an urban jungle twist! They have a couple of delicious Vegan options on the menu, a couple of desserts to die for, and healthy juices and smoothies.

you can visit the weekly Zamalek Market at Nün Center – it’s held every saturday and lots of vegan food businesses are there; Glow, Earthly Delights, etc.
